OK, it's not boaty, and I'm a sucker for the music of Philip Glass and and John Adams, but if you like contemporary music and you're near Edinburgh, then a wee visit to the Queen's Hall on Saturday night might not go amiss.

We're just back from the same programme being performed this evening by the SCO in Glasgow. Brilliant! As an encore, the Rascher Saxophone Quartet played a piece from Bach's Art of Fugue.

See Culture? See Glesga!

Sounds brill. Shame I'm in Brighton.

I did do a little tiny solo-ette (singing) with the Kronos Quartet in the Barbican once- great new music- the players waved their bows across a laserbeam of light to trigger various images shown on a screen... v. interesting.

Another little memory of 'new' music- years ago, I did a stint in a music library in London (forget which one) that had the only copy of a score of John Cages, which consisted of various bits of score on acetate that you 'threw' at a board in a random manner then played them- a piano work I think. Anyhoo, I managed to drop the folder, only to see many of the bits of plastic score slide down the gaps in the floorboards....
I think , in retrospect, Cage would have been pleased that another 'random' event had influenced the playing of one of his masterpieces!

John Adams at the Barbican

Really sorry I missed that. John Adams did two programmes at the Barbican last week, Sunday and Thursday. I was in London only on Tuesday night, so missed both.

His concerts are just outstanding - seen him two or three times at the Barbican, once with the LSO with Joanna MacGregor on the old, errmmm, piano. If I remember correctly, the LSO/MacGregor concert had his piano concerto Century Rolls, and also Lollapalooza. The atmosphere was electric. I recall counting something like 106 musicians on the platform that night, and, good grief, couldn't they swing?

It's all down to personal taste etc, but my feeling is that Adams will be seen as, at the very least, one of the finest composers of the late 20th century and early 21st. I think we are very lucky to be able to have access to this incredible talent.

Does he sail?
