Thanks for all your replies folks, especially Rob from Florida; if nothing else, it stimulated some awareness and healthy debate. But a couple of further thoughts.
- Re HMP on Portland, that is / was a very different situation and bears no comparison with today’s situation. An internal domestic issue to address a domestic problem and nothing to do with the international community, I believe.
- Re being a boost to the local economy and bringing trade into the area. Absolutely right and certainly no bad thing; but remember we’re not talking about Tourists here.
The whole debate is around a major worldwide problem, as we are all too painfully aware and any moves to address that problem are supported by us all, but this ain’t no picnic and we have to go into these things with our eyes wide open.
We live in a small and very crowded little island and we have to be aware of the implications of hosting a major military force on what is a busy stretch of water and a busy and popular area favourite with holidaymakers. It’s certainly not likely to be a small set-up and it will indeed have an impact and I would like to think that our government has thought through all the implications, addressed all the issues and made the right decisions……………………
In reply to Rob, I have no desire to be peering down the barrel of anything and I for one will certainly respect any security measures necessary!!! At the end of day, we’re all in the same boat heading in the same direction; that much I’m sure we all share.
………... in the meantime, let’s look forward to Christmas -- and then the next Season!!
