Navy antifouling - what\'s in it?

Anyone know what is in the red/brown erodable antifouling that the Navy use on their tugs etc.?

Re: Navy antifouling - what\'s in it?

The guys in the marina in Napa California have been buying some US Navy old stock of antifouling paint from "the paint fairy " (no kidding !!) at $ 60/gall !!
The stuff is now forbiden by the EPA !!
It's 97% copper !!
It supposed to be very efficient !!
When we get it it is like solid at the bottom of the can (5gall) and it gets lumpy !! So we found that by using a kitchen liquidiser we can get something smooth enough to put on the bottom of our boats !!
Any navy surplus here in Old Blighty ????

I thought they just had a loudspeaker fitted to the hull and the Cheif Petty Officer shouted at the barnacles once a day to "Get Orff!"

It is prob the same commercial stuff used at a local yard for tugs, barges and those blurry fast passeger things used on the Thames which are fixed around here.
It is rumoured to be very good stuff or so a friend has told me.

Bob
Definitely sounds like TBT to me.
Here on the Medway we have a number of "issues".
1. The salinity changes with the amount of rain we get - this year not a lot so the water is salty and we get a lot of growth.
2. HMG and MOD won't own up to the problems caused by Chatham Dockyard, which was a repair base for nuclear subs, so we have to contend with barnacles that are large enough to bite yer hand off and mussels that glow in the dark - useful if you want an alternative to led nav lights!

Peter.

Its not TBT, thats for sure, but it is pretty nasty stuff, got some when in Dartmouth "No names no pack drill", used it for two seasons (big drum) good stuff.
