Which is best paper version or lcd screen? Also which make is the best in your opinion. The ICS set at SBS looked good but I heard mutterings about a software glitch. Anyone have any experience of this set?

Re: definitely paper becuz...

...you want a record not a small screen disply, plus the paper ones take NMEA feed so they print a paper decklog every 15mins which is an excellent safety feature esp if Dubya switches off GPS and you have to get the paper charts out (yuk!)

As regards make, we have ICS, would def recommend it. Not aware of software glitch, ours is 2 yrs old and no probs so far

No chance of the US switching off the GPS. They need it themselves as evinced by what happened in the Gulf War when they switched the accuracy up for their tanks and other vehicles

Re: I meant to say...

I have the NASA navtex, been excellent for six years, no problems, LCD screen. do you really need to print it out, I dont think so and have never needed to, plus the paper most of the printer ones use is thermal, left out in the sun it gets hot and black.

I can't see any value whatsoever in a print-out. If you edit the stations and messages to those you really need, the NASA lcd memory has the capacity for several days. The weather is admittedly quite changeable at the moment, but you still only get two forecasts per day, plus the outlook in the middle of the night.

I have the ICS Nav 4+ and would not be without it. It does the log bits as explained below. You have a written record of weather etc even if somebody turns the wrong switch off. You can get weather forecasts in English on both sides of the channel. I have moved mine twice between boats and will certainly keep it. I used to have the old Nasa one with the CRT display which was good but I think the paper is better.

Re: I meant to say...

I have (rather had) a Nasa Navtex with the green screen and I have found it to be next to useless.
a) I never got round to rigging an independent power supply so that every time I left the boat the unit was switched off.
b) I got fed up programming the thing everytime I came back to the boat
c) Once programmed, you had await until the next weather forecast transmission whereas I wanted it there and then as I was going out - the internet/marina office/bbc/coastguard transmissions are better sources of instant data
d) The thing was very sensitive to voltage drop such as when say operating anchor winch and would power off just after having spent 3/4 hour programming it.

Apart from that I found them fine!

Re: I meant to say...

Yeah, I inherited the same unit. It's as much use as tits on a chicken, for all the reasons you say. I'd throw it out, but that's more holes in the gelcoat to fill...

Re: I meant to say...

Gotta go along with that. I mistakenly bought the NASA Navtex (instead of the Navtex Pro as instructed by himself) and it's been absolutely crap. It's difficult to programme (well, he thinks so anyway) and not the easiest thing to read.

We're currently investigating PC based alternatives, so if anyone has any info on them, it would be gratefully received.

Dead Easy

All you need is a SSB receiver that tunes around 500kHz, a computer and a lead from the headphone socket on the receiver to the mike socket on th puter.

Download a bit of software called Mscan Meteo text free from the web and off you go. If you have a printer you can have a paper copy.

Easy Peasy

Re: still in support of paper

Those who disagree that paper is good, I wont argue with you over weather info becuase it's personal choice between paper and LCD screen. But what about the decklog print function? Are you saying paper is the wrong medium for a deck log? I don't understand how you can think that.

Re volume, if you set the filters right, the ICS will spew about 1 to 2 metres of paper in a day's boating on the solent, so quantity is not a prob

Re: I meant to say...

hiya!!! how's it going in sunny BYH??

NASA do a software only kit for about £200...YBW.com shop have it for sale, I am going to go for the Transas NavTex when they release it for inshore and offshore forecasts (not weather wizard - the other one) but you need to whole charting gubbins too to use it....come over and I'll show you if you want.
