Navtex arial as a VHF arial-will it work?

I'm currently in Torreveija in Southern Spain with First Mate.

A friend keeps a 22 foot sailing cruiser in the marina here.

He is going home tomorrow and I have told him I will fit his EBAY Simrad VHF radio, in exchange for use of the boat now and then.

The arial that came with it is marked " NAVTEX " and I assume it was meant to recieve weather info.

Will it send as well as recieve?

I need to know-before I start climbing masts and stuff-am I flogging a dead 'un?

I can find a VHF arial here but he tells me the guy he bought it from said it worked with the NAVTEX arial.

He would prefer not to buy another one.

Can anyone advise please.

navtex is 518khz or 490khz. vhf is 156mhz. no, a navtex aerial will not work for a vhf radio.

Also Navtex aerials are usually "active" that means they have an amplifier built - in.
If you transmit, it will destroy the amplifier.

I don't understand, how can a font be marked "Navtex"? You would have more luck using an aerial anyway.

Back to to question, the aerial you have may have some value, don't chuck it.
