Hi all,

After some rainy days this winter I noticed some faint oils stains in the stern under the pump of the backstay adjuster. It is 20 years old and it is fitted to a X-412. Last week I contacted Navtec and they insisted only an authorised agent should touch it. I would like to service it myself and would appreciate any advice.

Thanks in advance

You are probably pretty well stuck with the option of sending it to France, but you could get a local rigger to make up a wire strop with a turnbuckle, as a temporary replacement. At least you will still be able to go sailing. Better still, you could get a purchase made up, with Dyneema line, which would give adjustability. You could then retain this, alongside the Navtec adjuster, as a safety fallback, in case of catastrophic failure of the hydraulic unit.
