Notwithstanding that your plotter is for a smaller boat, a colour screen makes a BIG difference, and you would quickly be sorry that you did not spend the additional money for a colour. If you have any chums going to USA, get them to purchase a Navman 5500 for you over there, (and declare it through customs) I did, and purchased it at $s for £s - so there was a big saving even after customs.

I would thoroughly reccommend Navman as a brand. I have now got several Navman instruements, and researched the brands for each one before getting Navman. Lowrance was my second choice. Definitely colour if you can manage it, even if you have to "save up"for a bit longer!
Cheers

Just heard that Lowrance have launched a colour plotter using Navionics charting for £399!! First sixty in the country sold immediately - not surprising at the price, but more on the way. May be worth talking to your local chandlery.

Whilst comparing the two chartplotters, bear in mind the chart types and availability. Navman use C-Map, and Lowrance use Navionics.

C-Map cartridges are regulary advertised 2nd hand, while I have not seen any Navionics 2nd hand. Even if you get a wrong type of C-Map cartridge, C-Map will exchange it for the type you need when updating it - usually March and October, with some (Solent to Channel Islands for one, I was informed today) in June.

I have no knowledge of the update frequency of Navionics.
