Navman Transponder-Too Noisy

Greetings,

I'm a relatively new boat owner, a 19' fiberglass over wood open skiff, 40 hp outboard. Last weekend I installed a Navman Fish 4500. To me the transponder seems abnormally loud. While at idle, one can hear a very noticable, "pop-pop-pop...." from the transponder. I realize it's sending out a signal (sonar ?) to read the depth, but just how loud, or prominent should the sound be. I frankly thought it would be essentiall silent.

Thank you in advance for any help.

Intersting one this.
Does the frequency of the "pop" increase with engine revs? If so it could be a suppresion problem, but most odd!

Well then, it seems that in an open skiff, with the transponder attached to the transom 6 feet away, and perhaps 8 inches below the surface, the "pop-pop-pop" of the signals will be quite audible.

Thanks to all who responded, I appreciate the help.

Next weekend, I will stick the Navman on, without the engine running, and listen to hear how loud it is. As my Fish is hooked up to the engine ignition, to record engine hours, I don't usually have it turned on when the engine isn't running.
