My one year old Navman 7100 (probably just over Warranty!!), has suddenly gone quiet: what I mean is that to hear anything from the radio you must turn up the volume to "max", and then it bellows. Just a few degrees below this and you don't hear anything. Does anyone have a clue as to what could be wrong?

Could be nothing more than the slider on the volume control got dirty, and only makes contact at full belt. It should be sealed but if the seals have failed then water would get in and do this. Warranty job methinks -open it yourself and you are on your own.

I agree with oldharry - almost certainly the volume pot has failed - in which case it needs replacing.

One year old is too soon for a VHF to fail - talk to your supplier, or directly to the manufacturer, and they should repair FOC.
