Would appreciate some info from anyone with experience of Navman fishfinders. These can sometimes (not always) be purchased new on eBay (paid for in UK and shipped from USA) at a favourable price. I've studied the Navman catalogue and it seems one can get the 'display and transom mount transducer', or 'display with Y cable for connection to other transducers' (i.e. thru hull). Are these displays different in their cabling? Are they identical except that one is suppied without transducers so that you can choose that which suits and not have to throw away the transom jobbie? If I bought one of the former, would I be able to connect thru hull transducers to it or would it only take the transom jobbie that came with it? I'm looking at the 4150 which has speed as well as depth. Don't want to try for a good deal and end up making a horrible mistake. Thanks in anticipation.

I looked at this one as well, and would probably have got it if my engine hadn't rearranged my cashflow by dying.

As far as I can remember, they're a lot easier to fin with transom mounted transponders, but can be bought without, then the transponder bought separately - at a price. I don't know if other makes of transponders will work.

I think Seamark Nunn had the best UK price. I'd be leary about the warranty situation with a US supplied eBay item.

I bought Lowrance supplied with transom transducer and simply bonded it to the hull with car body bodge stuff.
Five minute job that worked fine, taking care to pick the right spot with no voids below ect. ect.

I bought a Navman Fish 4380 colour, with through hull transducers, from the USA.

You can get one or the other. The display unit is the same for both, the only difference being the cables and transducers.

The transom mount transducers is both depth, log and temp in one unit, whereas the through hull transducers come with the Y cable, are one transducer for depth only, and the other tranducer being a paddle wheel log that also gives temp readings.

I went for the through hull option, as I wanted to replace the old Seafarer transducers. The sounder transducer hole had to be opened up a bit, and the log hole had a gap of 2mm around it. I filled the gap with Sikaflex, and this has set quite hard.

The colour display is excellent.

Data can be sent to a Navman chart plotter whereby you can see both speed through the water and speed over ground together, as well as seeing depth on the one display.

Worldwide warranty is covered by Navimo (Plastimo).

Send me a PM for my phone number if you want to talk.

regards,
Philip.
