the backlight feature on the Navman's packe up... I'm turning the brightness up to full and setting the unit on to daylight settings but it's barely legible in bright sunlight... is there a known fix or is it a case of throw away/send in for service? hope you can help.

If you already have the handbook'Operation and Installation manual' page 2-2 shows there is a sunlight setting in addition to the 'normal' one, and a 'night-time' setting as well; the values can be altered by the slider for each choice. I don't see any reference to an illuminating diode in the Tech Spec page if thats what is used for this. It does say that there are no user-serviceable parts within the unit though.
Para 2-4 on the next page gives a tip for pressing the ON button twice to give the brightest screen with a maximum backlight and the Night mode off.

Edit; Sorry didn't read the spec properly, mine is the 5505/5506 not the 5500 but may be the same set-up methods

My 5506i has the same problem - now nearly 5 years old and the display is much less bright than it used to be, even with max brightness and the 'sunlight' settings selected. I would love to know if there is any simple fix, but I suspect it may be just the ageing of the display. I also wondered if it might be voltage related - ie is it worse because my batteries are getting old?

repairing 5500 navman backlight

Yes it can be repaired,it has a cold cayhode fluorescent lamp (ccfl) and an inverter (12v to 600v and very small) i was told either the lamp or the inverter may be had it.90% chance it will be the lamp.I had the lamps made in USA nad sent to Australia and succeded to fix it It had the same symptoms Visible in the dark but impossible in the sunlight.
