Not having much luck with Raymarine instruments at present.

Just upgraded my chips from limited area Navionics Platinum + to the wider area coverage XL3 and it has left my 10yr old raymarine E120 and E80(helm) struggling to cope with new chips.

Firstly they are now confused as to what is the master unit and both kept rebooting.

Tried to reset to manufactory settings and nominated E120 as master but still don't like it.

Now I switch off E80 and initially start up only with the E120 and they manage but often freeze with apparent info overload (inadequate memory?).

They freeze if I tried setting heading up display - it appears they cannot cope with constant screen refreshing as heading changes.

They cannot display port photos.

Also neither could display enlarged detail when going into Loctudy (v shallow approach! lots of details!). min display was 1.5mls

tried looking on websites but Navionics is useless.

Will upgrade Raymarine software when back in UK but any other ideas or do I have to go back to the cheaper X size chips (having just paid £600 for 2 XL3 chips covering both the UK & France down to Med).

Both units functioned OK with the older smaller area coverage platinum + chips but they have to be PXed for the new ones!

Any advice appreciated.

Can't help very much except to say that Ariam's C70 seems quite happy with a new Navionics Plus card, replacing the ten year old one (not sure exactly what flavour).

And I only paid £80 for the upgrade, not £300!

You are correct its half price for upgrade.

Usual chip is £200 (Px £100) but wider area XL3 chip is £300 (PX £150).

Hence my Question on memory/info overload. Normal chip SP25 covers S coast & N france, XL3 chip covers whole of UK and N France.

I think all those different X-whatever cards are the old way, now. The intended future seems to be their Navionics Plus version, where the card you buy is effectively blank (apart from a magic code to prove you paid the money for it) and you download the area you want on it via a web page.

I have a new Lowrance plotter at the wheel, for which I bought Navionics Plus directly for £175 or thereabouts. I also have the C70, for which I bought the Navionics Plus Upgrade for £80. This works in a similar way (blank card, download charts) except that it knows it's an upgrade, and as part of the process you have to briefly insert your old card to prove you own it. After that, you don't need the old card any more; mine is in a desk drawer in case it ever asks me again, but if I knew for sure I suppose I could put it on eBay for a few quid.

For each of my Navionics Plus cards I chose to download the whole of the UK and the Channel coast from Denmark to somewhere around Brest. There is a restriction in that you can only download charts from one of the old chart areas to a particular card, so if I'd tried to drag my selection down the west coast of France (outside the area of the old XL3) it would not have let me.

Anyway, bit of a digression, but good luck with your plotter.
