Navionics or C-map?

My old Furuno plotter system has finally given up the ghost, so I've ordered a new Raymarine ES127 MFD. My current charts are on a different card format, so it also means new charts, and the ES will take either C-map or Navionics.

Any views on which is better?

We had Navionics Gold charts running on a Raymarine C80 on our yacht and I liked the charts. Our present boat has Furuno running C-Maps. Previous owners fitted a Navnet1 plotter in the Pilothouse and a Navnet II on the Flybridge, each plotter needing its own card, and the cards are incompatible. The cost of updating Navnet1 charts is un-affordable. I got an update of the NavnetII card for a reasonable price but I hate the charts. I particularly dislike the way that location names are displayed, and a lot of buoys and other navigation marks are un-named. I am also aware that C-Map's cartography has been discussed as a possible factor in the foundering of Vestas Wind. In 2016 the Nordhavn N47 Ghost Rider foundered on a submerged jetty while navigating using C-Map charts. I have seen screen shots of the charts which show the jetty and I think that if I had been relying on the C-Map cartography I would have hit the infernal thing myself. I am working on a brief for an instrument refit of our boat (ready for when we can afford it) and I am going to choose my charts before I choose my hardware because I want charts I personally feel confident about and I would hate to buy hardware and be stuck with charts which I don't like or don't trust. I won't be choosing C-Map.

I run both on my boat. The C-map is in my dragonfly and Navionics in my Raymarine MFD.

I prefer the Navionics chart layout and capabilities, plus it also has a fishing chart included by default in it

Navionics for me, their customer service is excellent, you can pick up the phone and talk to one of the small uk based team who are always pleased to help, when at LIBS a friend wanted to update his chart and was told the show offer was on until end Jan, he said I can't get to boat until end of March to collect chart and lady said that's no problem I will still update for you at show cost then for you, I haven't had any dealings with C map as never needed to but not got any reason to want to move away from Navionics

Nick, can't help you on the chart selection,
use Navionics in the Karnic
en C-map on BA,
both appear OK to me,
perhaps the navionics is (looks) a bit better, but the tides information (from region Holland) is crap

re your old Furuno system,
are there still working parts in that ?
are you going to replace it all,
radar ?

I still have the Navnet 2 system on BA (twin plotter)
might be interested in some spare parts...
