Yes this is annoying. Navionics is essentially static on an ipad (without phone connection) unless you are in wifi range. It works well on iphone.

I use this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/5870-Bluetooth-Receiver-iPhone-touch/dp/B004DDX66K

Which is very good although you sometimes have to restart Navionics to pick it up. It even works with the GPS in the sloon and the iPad in the cockpit.

I also have the Bad Elf but as that has to be connected directly it doesn't allow the ipad to fit my Ovdrboard waterproof bag so it is for backup only.

I've got navionics charts for iPad, but an iPad 2 without phone connection, but a Samsung s4. Anybody know how how to get gps info from the phone to the iPad?

I can't be bothered to look them up, but if they both have Bluetooth then it should be possible to get an app for each which transfers GPS info that way, maybe even for free. But whether or how to get Navionics to accept the GPS info from the iPad app, I don't know. (I have only been playing with such things on Android devices so far, and they both have their own GPS.)

(What is the relevance of the phone connection; GPS bundled only with phone option?)

Mike.

I spent some time chatting to the nice techie guys at Digital Yacht about getting NMEA from their iAIS product on to Navionics and using the GPS from that. Their view was that Navionics are very nervous about allowing their current customer base of plotter suppliers to be cannibalised so the Navionics for iKit is locked down. They were saying you can't even get the iPhone GS across on to the iPad version so I'd be surprised if you can get Samsung to work.
