A friend asked me if Navionics charts for IPad is any good in Lesbos area. I haven't a clue as I have only used them in North Europe. Any one used them around Greek Islands or any alternative set up?
Thanks.
Neil

No i use it on my Lowrance HDS9 chartplotter, but iPad map may be the same no ?

Not sure if the mobile chart is the same detail. I guess it probably has the same. I was hoping someone may have used it with Ipad around Lesbos.
Thanks again.

Navionics on the iPad has good maps for this region (generally better than C-Map)

They are a bargain price.

Thank you noelex. He has an Ipad so that is good news. I will pass the info on to him. I have Navionics on my Ipad for north Europe and find it very good.

Here is a typical screenshot from Lesbos FYI Bridgman.

The cartography for Lesvos suffers from the same problem as many other Greek islands - it has never been surveyed very accurately. As noelex shows, the entrances to the two inland seas, around Mitilini and Plomarion are fairly good but in many other places the depths close in are just a guess, with blue patches extending far further out to sea than reality. OK if you don't want to get in close but needs lots of caution if you do.

Thanks noelex and vyv-cox. My friend will find this very helpful. From the screen shot I think it will be fine for him. Out of interest is the lack of detail inshore also on the paper charts of area?

I do agree with Vyv. If you venture off the beaten track the maps can be terrible with depths that are totally wrong. However, Navionics seems at least as good as any of the electronic or paper charts.

The best technique is to use several map sources, including pilot books, as well as Google Earth and then station someone at the bow when coming into any of the out of the way anchorages. The water is so clear the bottom detail can usually be easily seen.

The Captain Elias pilots with charts are perhaps the most accurate of all (where there has been a survey). Rather quirky books that take some getting used to, and even then some of his advice is to be taken with a pinch of salt.

I use a Garmin plotter and cartography but have Navionics HD on an iPad. There have been many occasions when the Navionics has been far superior to the Garmin. I am in the process of replacing my plotter and have bought Navionics Gold to run on it.
