We successfully use the Navionics card for the British Isles which came with the boat when bought in our Raymarine C80 chartplotter,

This GB card is about 43mm by 36mm and is larger than a standard SD card.

We are considering sailing to the Faroes next month and would like to buy a suitable card will work “out of the box” with our plotter. Adverts refer to SD/MSD cards but they are smaller than the one we need for the C80.

Any help gratefully received, we'll be leaving in a couple of weeks.

Thanks

Mike

It’s a CF card, (compact flash) I’m not sure they are still available, would try Navionics direct and ask

Compact Flash Cards Discontinued

Not sure if you could buy a secondhand Navionics CF card for another region and then use the Chart Installer to buy and install the appropriate cartography for the Faroes.

Looks like the Faros are in the Navionics 20XG region - quite a few chandleries come up if you google that, so might be worth phoning around and seeing if anyone has a copy in their old stock. yachtingsoftware.com would seem to be top candidate, if that price is right.

Thanks for the replies, I finally discovered the discontinuation of Compact Flash (CF) cards from Navionics in the early hours.

Could I solve this problem by buying a "compact Flash Memory Card Adapter" then using a modern Navionics micro SD card? Would this work for my C80 plotter which needs a CF ?

Unfortunately not. Raymarine do a dedicated micro sd to compact flash adapter but it only works with the later E series wide screen. Your stuck with CF. They do come up occasionally on ebay.

Thanks, another option might be an add-on to my Samsung Navionics phone app? Also possibly on the laptop?

We'll only need the chart for the approaches to Torshavn, as we intend to explore the islands by hire car.

We already have a vintage paper chart, just for the overview. This electronic chart may be a good option, but will need to contact the shop to confirm compatibility with the C80.

Just as an aside, we've been offered insurance via our present insurer GJW for the 2 week trip, no anchorages for an additional £127 which seems reasonable.

I have been to the Faeroes. Navigation there is very straightforward. Approaching Torshaven is a doddle using the paper chart.

I would add a photo of the chart, but I only have my phone and the file size is to big to post.
Now resize

OK, been able to resize them. From Danish chart Nr 82.

That's the going rate for a chartplotter cartridge that covers such a wide area.

Compare with Navionics 43XG for current model chartplotters which costs about the same. I find it hard to justify buying the cartography with smaller coverage areas, because it's much more expensive on a per-area basis; compare this chart of Western Italy with the 43XG - it is not even 50% cheaper, but the coverage area is much, much smaller.

For those with newer chartplotters (that accept SD cards), C-Map's "Discover" series of cartography seems the best deal. It looks like they introduced it a couple of years ago, and each Discover cartridge covers a larger area than those of the previous "Wide" series.
