I've recently updated my Navionics app on my smartphone. It now seems to have wind information which I don't recall seeing before. Where does it get this info from? and is it available when not connected to internet? (I don't allow syncing when free wi-fi not available as I'm on PAYG).

Someone may know, but I was looking at Navionics web page over weekend for Android, and apart from ALOT of complaints about it, there was quite alot in the FAQ. You might try there.

It is grib data from the GFS forecasts. It is available offline after you have downloaded it once for an area. It not only has the 4 box display but if you click in the wind it gives a GRIB overlay onto the chart with wind barbs with data for the next 3 days.

Can I ask if anyone can get this app. working on a Galaxy Nexus. Mine worked up to the last update and now reads on startup "UK & Holland has stopped". Have reported many times without any response. Anyone got their money back?

Good news

For info Navionics recent update today resolved my Nexus issue. good news and works well now so they won't have a problem with me at the boat show.:):):)

I can only view this when I have wifi (or 3g) so it wouldn't be much use at sea but is useful before setting out.

Was thinking about downloading as a quick reference, and noticed the following permissions which the app has access to (taken from the google play store info);

This application has access to the following:

directly call phone numbers
Allows the app to call phone numbers without your intervention. This may result in unexpected charges or calls. Note that this doesn't allow the app to call emergency numbers. Malicious apps may cost you money by making calls without your confirmation.

take pictures and videos
Allows the app to take pictures and videos with the camera. This permission allows the app to use the camera at any time without your confirmation.

Why on earth would they want control for those functions?

OK - Thanks. Maybe there has been something lacking in the translation from Italian (Are they not an Italian company?).

'Without your Intervention' implies that the app will do things all by itself - but if the app is going to call a marina, then you surely must initiate the call, even if it is via the app - the same way that you would call, say, a restaurant from within Google maps.

The explaination that you can initiate these calls from the App as well as perhaps 'initiate' pictures beong taken looks very useful to build a library of various navigations shots for reference.

Tried to buy the app as a christmas present to someone. It was impossible to do from the internet. An appeal for help to th company provided an answer that told me absolutely nothing . What a waste of space.
