Navionics Android vs Jeppensen Plan2Nav

Apart form the fact that for the time being only Plan2Nav works on my Nexus 7.... has anyone got any views on the relative quality of the two apps?

In particular the charts - having tried both (Navionics on a previous device) my feeling is that the chart quality if better in Navionics (especially for Hartlepool marina where hardly any detail, including the leading light, is shown in Plan2Nav). But there is a lot more useful information in the latter, though the UI is clunky.

I don't think I'd use either as a primary navigation source - but what do others think?

I'll be interested in the reply to this - planning on getting the nexus 10

by the way, what do you think of the 7? is it any good for browsing and emails or is it, like a phone, a bit too small?

The 7 is much more usable than a phone. Very adequate for browsing over breakfast and answering things like this!
I've got the Cmap app am having a play before buying charts.
The screen is about the same size as a Garmin 750.....

I dithered then bought a 10" Motorola Xoom.

Memory Map allowed me to migrate my UK charts from 2011 Windows Mobile phone.

The larger screen makes browsing, films, really good. I've played with the plotter but not yet on the boat.

GPS much quicker than my oldish HTC phone

I went WIFI only to avoid two sim cards and tether my phone via BT

FWIW, Detail wise, it shows my old finger pontoon in Hartlepool and my current berth in Fleetwood (Though newer pontoons nearer call centre missing)

I have both apps.

I would agree that the Navionics charts APPEAR to be more detailed, but I also must point out that in my local area there are bits that are at least 6 years out of date.
C-Map is correct for the area.

Navionics route planning is carp. You put down points and if you want to move one in the middle, you have to delete points back :confused:
Plan2Nav allows you to move any point on a route, all though selection can take a second or two.

General useability is about the same, although my impression is that Plan2nav is more stable. I have had the Navionics app stop working for no apparent reason a number of times, but so far Plan2nav has just run.

Having a Standard Horizon CP180 with a C-Map and Plan2Nav makes life very easy for me as the maps are exactly the same.

I will be using Plan2Nav as my backup, with charts as a final fall back.

I didn't realise that Navonics had a competitor in the Android app market, I bought the Navonics map and software around 3 yr ago I think i paid around £23 for it at the time good value i thought till 3mth down the line my phone updated and Navonics would no longer work.

I emailed Navonics who informed me they had updated there program inline with the next Android platform release and if i wanted a working version I'd have to pay again. I did not take up the offer what's stopping them doing the same thing again? I don't mind the paying part but they state once bought and paid for Navonics is for life, But they failed to tell you that if your Android platform updates the program is useless.

Can anyone tell me how many beer tokens Plan2nav costs for Android, i notice on checking that the software is free but what about the charts?

I've bought a shed load of mobile kit over the years. and the Nexus 7 is my favourite thing since the Psion Series 3a Organiser I had in the 90s.

Perfectly usable. Good battery life. Easy to carry. No problem even reading PBO on it.

There is another Android chart APP:- GPS Nautical Charts-UK this one is about £20.00, it uses HSMO charts which are free! I have it installed on my Transformer 101 and on my Galaxy S3. I have not tried it in 'anger, but playing with it at home it does seem to be very user friendly, unlike in my opinion the Navionics APP. BTW I also have Plan2Nav, which I also rate above Navionics, these will be backups to my on board Garmin system.
 
I was a very happy Navionics user on my Asus Transformer TF-101, it's a brilliant app to just leave running as a quick visual aid to confirm my rough position at a glance and record tracks. However around the time of their infamous withdrawal of the app, the app on my tablet started to have issues. Now it only starts about 1 in 20 or so attempts, I have to keep trying to start it over and over untill it finally stops crashing and gets to the screen where you tap 'Agree', then it stays running with no problems untill I turn it off. Because of this issue, combined with getting no reply at all from my email to Navionics, and the risk that any investment in Navionics could be totally wasted if they decide to do the dirty again, I'm not willing to upgrade to their new version.

I have installed Plan2Nav along with the demo chart which shows Portsmouth. I am impressed with the look of it, buit being used to Navionics I find a couple of things frustrating about it.

  • You can't lock the rotation which is controlled by rotating 2 fingers on screen, so invariably the chart rotates when I try to zoom in or out which is controlled by moving 2 fingers closer or further apart. I often don't notice at first which causes some confusion.
  • To get a good level of detail on screen you have to zoom in a lot, even on a 10" tablet, which is frustrating when you want a wider view with good detail as an aid like I do.
  • I'm not sure about this one, but I think purchased charts can only be used on one device, so you can't use them on your tablet and phone for instance. This might be wrong though if I have misunderstood what the FAQ is saying.

The UK chart is I think a little over £25 for Plan2Nav.

In my opinion Plan2Nav has some serious potential to be much better than Navionics but to me it seems to be in it's infancy. There also seems to be a lot more options for it on Ipad than on an android, so it may be that the android app simply isn't as evolved as the ipad one. I am watching and waiting with high hopes ready to buy it if it realises some more of it's potential.
Much as I like the Navionics app, they would need to make some serious commitments to service and guarentees before I will consider spending more money with them, I'm simply not willing to risk that much money on the off chance the app will work on my device and I get a reasonable life from it before they remove it again.

I had the same with an Apple app, they changed it before i even had a chance to use it.

Navionics customer service are terrible, I will never buy their products again.
 
Navionics customer service leaves a lot to be desired. I bought a Galaxy Tab 2 especially for this app. After a month, and having paid for the Australasia/Indian Ocean access (the most expensive), the app just crashes. I emailed them and they said no return on my money.

Jeppensen, meanwhile, appear to have restrictions on the countries you can download in. Here in India I cannot access it at all. Apparently I can if I root the Galaxy but I don't want to be messing around with it for fear of bricking the tab just before we're about to depart.

Now that is a useful comment. I still miss my Psion. Brilliant werent they - why they lost out I will never know.
