Hi All,
Though everyone might want to see this new clause added to my Navigators & General (Westerly Owners) Policy that came in the post today:
Basically they are saying that the boat must be as per the original spec from 1981!
This was not on last year's policy.

I have changed/added/uprated:
engine
Sales
Rigging
Rewired Electrics
Added Instruments
bilge pump
upholstery
toilet
fresh water system
Etc

in the last 20 odd years and that is just in my ownership.

As far as I can see this clause will void most westerly owners policies and almost all others unless your boat is brand new.
I'll be calling them in the morning....

Farcical!

Not really farcical. Insurance is a contract of trust / disclosure. This clause would encourage the boat owner to disclose alterations to original spec, which in turn should enable the insurer to assess whether certain risks have been increased - or decreased.
Pretty sure it is a customary clause in car insurances.

Adding shore power, or changing the sails ?

You think those, for example, are sensible clauses ?

Car insurance tends to have causes against modifications to the engine etc that would affect performance, but i've never seen a policy that says you can't fit new tyres.

Ridiculous!

Who, in God's name can say their Westerly is as per original Waterlooville spec.
My Pageant certainly is not.

Who for that matter can state that any boat is...standard.

I've insured via Haven Knox-Johnston (Now MS Amblin) for the last 20 years or so and they never ask questions like that.

They want to know; where I keep it, what I do with it, and what they think I think it's worth.
That'll do me.

It has probably been cut and pasted from their motor insurance branch. I met a similar thing when filling a VAT form which asked me to record how many doors my boat had.

Thanks for noting this, I have just renewed and I had not spotted this change. Do you know if this is new this year, it was not there on my policy Oct 2017

Yes double checked last year's defiantly not there.
Will see what they say in the morning...

I will be very interested in their answer-my boat is 1976 and apart from the hull itself there have been dozens of changes oer the years, before and in myownership.

Let us know what they say. I suspect there will be a lot of policies not renewed unless they fix this!

To be fair, there used to be a bit of a hoo-hah over insurers saying you couldn’t fit winter tyres in winter because this wasn’t the manufacturer’s UK spec (despite it being mandatory on the same car in, eg, Germany). I believe most saw sense on that a few years ago, though.

And obviously the clause in this thread is dubious on boats in general and laughable on Westerlys in particular.

At risk of thread drift, General Accident still will not insure a car on winter wheels and tyres, even manufacturer supplied and recommended ones. Will only accept winter tyres on existing very wide rims - which is not factory approved and much less safe. So be warned that this madness still exists. Escalated but still not not resolved so had to cancel and move policy.
