A claim has been made in another thread that Navigators and General should be avoided as an insurance company for yachts.

The thread in question: -

http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthread.php?t=327310

I am insured via Nautical Insurance Services Ltd and they have offered a Navigators and General Yacht and Motorboat Policy. I have read through the policy and its not unreasonable as far as I am concerned. Perhaps I am not skilled enough to read between the lines.

For example: betterment is explicitly mentioned for sails, covers and running rigging up to 1/3 of the value; nothing limiting grounding claims if the engine broke down. The two examples appear to be issues that have been mentioned, I assume for other policies.

So, does anyone have a negative opinion on the NandG that they would wish to share?

Thanks,

BlowingOldBoots

No. Not had a claim, but I insured with them directly and have found them to be nothing other than professional and friendly. They are the preferred insurers for the Westerly Owners Association and I am certain that if they were tricky, then this would not be the case.

I find it astonishing that a new member, with seven posts to his name can post C*** like that without telling us why he feels that. I dont even know why you are giving it brain-space?

The query is being made because recent posts have made negative claims about poor quality policies from unnamed insurance companies with the implication that there is an erosion of service in general from insurance companies (another post). Its the collective "brain-space" that I am after regarding NandG.

Thanks for the WOA comment and your own experience / findings of them.

Does a new members opinion or experience have any less validity than yours? I was just wondering , just in case I should seek permission from more experienced members of a forum before I make any statements or ask any questions?

I understand why you are asking - but I meant giving brain-space to his stand-alone comment, rather than giving brain-space to the whole information gather process including experiences :) I just thought the guy was an idiot....

Not at all, but he was asked why and as he had gone to the trouble of increasing the font size & the colour for his post, but couldnt be bothered to substantiate his comment! If a stranger walked into my local and shouted AVOID TESCOS, I would just think, idiot. If someone who had been there a while and who was known to be reasonably intelligent (or not) shouted the same thing, I would ask him why? Thats all :)

It does when it's a post like this.

I wouldn't normally take any notice of that kind of thing, but if someone I knew was normally sensible and reliable said it, then I might enquire further.

Fair point. Thanks. Sorry to question your response; it just came accross that his point held less validity because he had not posted very often. :)

Been with N&G for too many years - more than I care to remember actually and have no complaints. Never made a claim but I know a couple of my sailing cronies that have and in both cases the claiims were dealt with promptly and to the claimant's satisfaction - so a + vote for N&G

Just changed over from N+G purely on price.

Had excellant service, very professional outfit and had a claim settled with no fuss.

Would not hesitate to recommend them and wished they could have matched the other quotes but needs must

I have insured a number of boats through NIS over some 12 years or more (currently 3 live policies) and through them with a number of Insurance companies. The only claim that I have ever made, and it was a 3rd party claim against me, was on a policy with N&G. I could not fault either NIS or N&G in the way the claim was handled.

Thanks folks. I'll switch off my paranoia now. Appreciate your comments.

My friend had his boat clattered on the mooring with damage to the davits and the stern of the boat. Several thousand with lifts, yard storage, mast removal and indoors fibreglass work. N&G were very good and agreed to delay the work until the season end so my friend did not miss the season and had free storage over most of the winter. I insure with them and always found them professional and good to deal with but no claims so far.
