\"Navigation Walks................

...along the Blackwater and the Chelmer Navigation"

This nice booklet published by Essex County Council was for the taking at the marina today. I recommend it to the house (particularly those whose Council Tax has paid for it!)

Pity it wasn't winter walking weather like last year. Next year is always going to be different of course.

Re: \"Navigation Walks................

Several years ago the people at Heybridge Basin did a waterbound charabang from Chelmesford to Heybridge and Jude and I were lucky enough to be invited. It was really quite lovely and varied greatly. Interesting point was in one lock where due to the very heavy rain the day before, we got stuck half way down a lock because the water pouring over the top of the top gate exactly matched the water getting out the bottom sluices. Really quite bizarre being stuck like that until the canal people opened a sluice somewhere that diverted water from the upper pound away. The Canal's real business is growing Willow Trees!

Re: \"Navigation Walks................

We took a narrowboat up to Chelmsford in whatever year the foot and mouth was just finishing, thought a very lovely canal/river, miles better than the upper Medway which we had just come from. The pity is that the bridges were so low which deters any normal motor cruiser coming into Heybridge to venture up further. But perhaps thats part of the attraction, being so empty of other boats.

Re: \"Navigation Walks................

I have just started working in Chelmsford and as I walk over the Chelmer each day, I wondered whether I could leave the boat at Heybridge and explore. I will look out for the leaflet.

There was a chap canoeing in Chelmsford the other day and I wondered what clearance the bridges have?

Re: \"Navigation Walks................

I've done that walk a couple of times now. A good half way stop at Paper Lock (Little Baddow) for tea and cake in the cafe. Surreal experience emerging into Chelmsford High Street after a 15 mile hike.

Re: \"Navigation Walks................

Many years ago I was crossing the Chelmer in Chelmsford, by the Army & Navy (before the A12 bypass) and was very surprised to see Charlie Stock's boat SAILING down the chelmer. Now there's someone who really got everywhere !
