On my little tub I have a stern light port and starboard lights and a forward facing light which shows over the same arc as the side lights In effect the light forward and the stern light combine to give an allround white light.

Question, can I do away with the stern and forward white lights and put an all round white light on a small mast. The forward light is a pain in the backside. Its mounted on top of the grab rail thats just above the screen. With the cabin top being white gelcoat, it kills my night vision fairly quickly.
My idea is to put an allround white on a small mast/pole to take the light above eye level. Also if I can put a small shield around the base of the light it will stop any reflection from the cabin top, I might have half a chance of keeping half decent night vision.

What do the rules and regs say regarding this. The existing lights were fitted when the boat was built. Also could the light double as an anchor light. The boat is under 12 mtrs in length. Whats your opinion.

Barry - a boat under 12 metres may show an all round white light instead of masthead light and stern light. Plus, of course, your sidelights. So go ahead and do it.

As a matter of interest, if you were a vessel over 12 metres but under 50 metres then you'd have to show masthead and stern light and over 50 metres you'd need to show two masthead lights, the aft one being higher than the forward light.

Hmm, wonder why the builders went for the current set up then. Which seems to be the configuration for a boat over 12 mtrs but under 50 mtrs.

Barry - Solitaire has same configuration. Make sure though that your all round white will also work as your anchor light without port/starboard lights on. But maybe you don't anchor up overnight! But still need it if still at anchor after sunset!

there is a cheaper way../forums/images/icons/cool.gif.......... get a silhouette cut that will fit under the light and causes the boat to be in showdow,... it works. I have seen me put a towel or jacket under the light at night to stop the glaire of the helm instrument panel; before now. .....
