hi all, my first post on this forum. having just passed my marine radio licence today I'm looking for a good quality handheld unit. I have a brand new Navico Axis 200 complete with charger etc but no battery. Can any of you guys recommend were I can get a battery, either new or used (or broken as I can replace the cells). Or should I forget this unit and go for something with DSC. Regards Ken

Much better to buy a new handheld, I had an axis 150 and it was a right pain with the Nicads going flat, now have an Icom with LiIon batery and I hardly ever need to charge it.

PBO did a review this month Standard Horizon came out well at £129 RRP street price £85 cheaper than a battery for the Simrad. They are however NiMh not LiIon but they are far better than NiCads.

Welcome to the forums. The battery pack from the Yachtbits link is £110, which is a bit steep! You can get it for about £90 at Provident Technology. That's still a lot of money. If you can't get a used one, it'd probably be worth putting the money towards something more modern (although the Axis is superb quality, if a little bulky).

Thanks pvb, yes my thoughts exactly, i would prefare to spend the cash on a new one but will keep an eye open for a used battery

Hi & welcome
i also have the axis cost me 400 squids 4 yrs ago ,had the dilemma last year when the 2 batteries failed. buy new radio or battery @ extortionate cost. it is a very good radio so bought battery.
on reflection i should have bought a new Icom with Li-on battery for not much more cash

I have an Axis 250, and when the original battery pack died I opened it up and replaced the original NiCds with tagged NiMH cells. These are much higher capacity, giving it a usefully longer operation time. And the NiMH replacements only cost around £20.

The quality of the Axis - especially audio quality - is superb, but it is just so big and heavy compared with newer products (although it does have a feeling of indestructibility about it). For everyday use, I have a little Standard Horizon with Li-Ion battery.

I've gone and bought a icom IC-M33, as my main set but will keep an eye open for a battery for the Navico, thanks guys.

will the original charger still be ok with these.
i still have the original u/s batteries so could mod them

[/ QUOTE ]Yes, it works fine. I'll warn you that the original battery pack isn't the easiest thing to break into. If you're seriously considering it, send me a PM and I can maybe suggest a few tips to save you time.
