Avril has booked up for the Yacht Master Shore Based Course at our Yacht Club (she already has a Day Skipper). On the list of things to get for the course is a Portland Plotter. We have a couple of Bretton Plotters sculling around in the chart table, is there any difference? The Plotter I have been using I inherited 20 years ago and is yet another type whose name I know not, but I am very fond of it. Thanks in anticipation.

Both work on the same principle and in RYA course notes "Portland/Breton plotter" is specified.

I still prefer parallel rules.(old dog new tricks syndrome) and as for this GPS gimmickry it will never catch on!

The only difference is that the Portland model is much more clear and legible for eyes like mine.

It sometimes happens that people who sign up for shore based courses soon realise they need an eye test /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

They're all completely useless except as set-squares for screwing holes in the right places. SWMBO came back from a course with one & it got banished to the far recesses of some locker or other. I used to use Capt Field's or a cunning parallel thingy which attached to the chart table.
