Nav. software bought at Boat Show not workinpurcha

Re: Go for them!

"If you bought a new car from a dealer and it didn't work and he told you to speak to the manufatcurer you wouldn't take it, so why is software any different."

Would much prefer to talk to the motor manufacturer. There would at least be some chance of talking to someone who knew what he was talking about - as opposed to some little girl on the reception desk!

If owners of new yachts took the same approach most people would end up returning their new yachts and demanding a refund. The same applies to new houses.

A Windows PC loaded with software from multiple vendors is far more complex than a yacht so why the different expectations?

The computer industry is striving to make computers trouble free domestic appliances but it will take another 10 years, in the mean time most people put up with the annoyances of PC ownership.

can i quote you on that???

i've been in the computer industry for 35 years and they are less reliable now than when i started. if someone told bill gates he couldn't release a new operating system till the current one worked properly we might be in with a chance, otherwise reckon on 100 years, not 10!

Re: Go for them!

Exactly, if the dealer told me to go the the manufacturer I would be annoyed, and I certainly wouldn't expect an accessory supplier to tell me to go the manufacturer.

Software develpers hate the customers because the customers live in the real world, where things are not quite as perfect as softweare developers believe that they should be if customers are to be permitted to spend their money buying the software.

If they can't make it work straight from the box, then they are in the wrong business, so STUFF EM!

Computer Software is not complicated

You sell it on one CD to Deutsche Bank for $50M take the commission and buy your boat.

Maptech BA charts with tides not 2003 compliant

It gets better. Once you've installed it, and eventually got it working you'll probably find the tide fcilities do not function. The BA charts (with tides) sold at the boat show have a bug which stops this facility working in 2003.

A fix is being released this week.

I suspect that they knew this when they demonstrated and sold the product to me. Which I am NOT happy about. Infact when a called evo they did sheepishly confirm the software wasn't working correctly during the boat show, but sold it regardless.

By altering the PC's clock to 2002 everthing functions fine, you can view tides for 2002-2003.. But not 2004!! So it appears this product doesn't even have a 12 month shelf life. Not such good value after all.

By the way the software looks pretty good otherwise.

Programs & Yachts

There is one significant difference between yachts & programs.

Usually a yacht with a faulty widgit will still work. A program with a faulty .dll won't.

I occasionally do a bit of programming (last major effort got to >35000 lines of C++ code). I didn't let anybody use it until it all worked.
Properly.
And nobody will ever pay me a penny for my efforts (free software for all!).

Software publishers should take a more responsible attitude to their customers.

Richard
