I purchased some software from Evo Distributions Ltd at the Boat Show on Saturday. Its the Maptech Navigator lite and has a 20 chart portfolio attached to Chart plotting facility. Cost £100 and was recommended (I think) in PBO.

Tried to load it and it comes up with an immediate error message. Phoned Evo Distribution office and they advised that 'they had no idea' what the problem was and I should contact the American software manufacture. I replied that as they had sold me the goods it was their responsibility, and could I have a word with their marine software manager. No, he is at the show. Can I have the stands telephone number, no! The sales peoples number, No!

Anyone know a direct number for one of the company's directors.....I'm getting pretty bloody annoyed.

While the responsibility lies with the seller, it is not unreasonable for them to ask you to talk directly to the software manufacturer. Eventually they are the ones who will have to help on any technical issue, and communication is likely to be better if you talk to them directly rather than through a third party.

Maptech is supposed to be good, and I'm considering buying it myself. HOWEVER, despite the problem perhaps being to do with the American programmers, you bought the goods in good faith and if they don't work there is a legal responsibility under the sale of goods act for the product to be changed as it is "not fit for the purpose sold". Further more, you can demand that they collect the faulty product and either replace it or refund your money.

Going myself at the end of this week to have a word with Pantaenius....seems that the autrocious levels of customer service here in the UK are getting worse.

I picked up the business card from one of their guys at the show on Friday. It's at home at present so I'll send you the details via a PM this evening.
I use their charts but not their plotting software. Charts are fine and I'm sure their software is OK as well so I guess the problem isn't insurmountable. I understand your frustration though - nothing worse than buying a new toy and not being able to use it!
What error message are you getting?

Give us a clue what the problem is.
Someone mentioned he elsewhere it could be your browser level, if you're unning IE5 then try upgrading to 5.5 or 6, this solved a bug the other day in loading Autooute 2002.

Re: Nav. software bought at Boat Show not workin

I'm getting a small box which is titled

Error Starting Programme

A required DLL file,KERNDL32.DLL was not found.

This is the only message that I am getting on trying to start the programme. yes I am also a computer illiterate, so be gentle with me.

In practice I agree with you. However if you sell a product you damn well should know how it works.

I am continually frustrated by the lack of professional competence in anything to do with computing ( starting off with my own - but it's not my field) and the attitude that they are doing you a favour in simply fulfilling their professional responsibilities.

My tactic is that I tell them that I'm a frustrated wanabee lawyer and I litigate just for the fun of it. It has worked twice recently with new replacement products being provided free. This was of course after having exhausted the normal channels first.

When you get blocked, try firing off an e-mail to the Chairman of the Group explaining that you feel it is necessary to go to this level in order to find somebody with some idea of customer service - you could copy their supplier at the same time.

Glad I got that off my chest..

Hi, just a thought. What is your operating system and does Maptech work on it?

Computer software is tremendously complicated. However with such a basic problem as this the problem is more likely to be with the machine on which it is being installed than with the software itself. So in effect what he is asking for is free support to fix a problem with his computer, not support to get the software working first.

Legally you would be in a very difficult position trying to reject the software without giving them the chance to put it right.

Re: Nav. software bought at Boat Show not workin

I am by no means knowledgeable in this field but I believe the last time I saw a message like that on my PC was after I had freed some space on my hard drive by deleting some programmes, some of which took certain files with them that I wished they hadn't. Think I ended up reinstalling Windows.

Is it possible to load the software on a friends PC to try and isolate/confirm where the problem lies? Might avoid the risk of egg/face interface if the problem does prove to be at your end.

Notwithstanding any of that I agree with the comments elsewhere re UK customer service. Funny enough I have last week been playing with a Maptech demo CD that came with last years Almanac and was thinking of looking at the real thing on Thursday. Maybe if I can find another supplier....

Good Luck,

Steve

<font color=blue> Have a look here and you should be able to solve the problem.

kernel32.dll is a component of your Windows system. If it's missing it's a problem with your Windows Software.

What version of windows are you using?
What other software is running OK on the PC?

You could try checking if this software is on the PC by
- opening Windows explorer
- select "Tools"; "Find"; Files or Folders"
- Type kernel32.dll in the search box then click OK

The file should be located in the "Windows"; "System" folder

Go for them!

I'm with you.

If software doesn't work straight out of the box, get rid of it. Frst impressions (of the negative type) are rarely wrong in anything to do with computers.

If the stuff only works for people who enjoy fiddling with their computers then tell them where to stuff it.

If you bought a new car from a dealer and it didn't work and he told you to speak to the manufatcurer you wouldn't take it, so why is software any different.

Re: Go for them!

If I got rid of every bit of software that did not work first time, everyone in my office would be looking at blank screens.
The kernel problem is nothing to do with the software, as others have said this is to do with Windows.

Re: Go for them!

If you bought a new computer with all the software pre-loaded by the manufacturer or dealer, your car analogy might work, and you would indeed expect it to work.

If someone buys a car accessory and has problems making it fit a much modified and tinkered with car, it's not necessarily the car manufacturer who is at fault.

Off the shelf computer software problems are seldom with the software itself, and are more typically with the setup of the computer, or even trying to run the software on the wrong operating system, and sometimes with conflicts with other software the user has loaded.
