I have been looking at a few small trailer sailers, without any Nav lights.

I know a boat under 7m can get away with an all round white but would that be enough.

Lets say the boat is 22 foot (less than 7m) what would you be happy with ?

Tricolour mast top light for sailing. but what about motoring ?

Adding a stern, Bi-colour, and steaming light for motoring ?

How about a combined mast head for tri-colour sailing and an all white for motoring. The all white could also be used for anchoring !!!!

Remember this is a 7m boat run off a single battery with only an outboard to charge the battery.

Port stb'd and stern all at deck level and all LED to reduce power required, you could run them off small rechargables if needed.

Steamind and mooring light on a lanhard hoisted to the required position.

Personally I have

Port and stb'd, although for battery economy a bicolour would be more sensible if it were not for the tricolour.
Masthead (steaming)
Stern

Tricolour.

That gives me lights for motoring and two options when sailing.
They are switched so that I cannot show an illegal combination.
The tricolour has the optional 10w bulb rather than 25w. (All the others have lower wattage bulbs than they should in fact)

I hang a light in the rigging for anchoring. Previously a "hurricane" lamp but now an LED lantern.

I am not satisfied that replacement LED bulbs would be a good buy and although I will have to replace the tricolour I probably will not shell out for an LED one.

I have a 60Ah battery a 5watt solar panel and in theory at least 60watts available from the outboard engine. I could (should) with this engine put 10 watt bulbs in the other lights.

A single all-round white alone is in theory an option for motoring but the regs do say that side lights should been shown if practicable ..... it is! Even if used in conjunction with side lights it can be difficult to see against shore lights which makes it unsuitable at times as the stern light.

Personally in a small boat anchorage in shallow water I believe an anchor light around eye level is more sensible than one atop the mast.

I am unlikely to make my new tricolour a tricolour/all-round white combination.

Paul, you are pretty well talking about my Dehler 22 (Just over 6m) The only light on it is a masthead white, which is quite legal but no, I wouldn't put to sea like that in the dark, and I have plans to upgrade.

My Electrics are 80Ah battery, a small solar panel and an outoard with a charger (Which i've never used being on Rutland)

The main attraction of deck level lights is easy access and maintainance, whereas a nice tricolour on the top of the mast would show up better and be less deck clutter..and you'd need a steaming/motoring light. LEDs have made all this very viable for my little ship, but I will wait until prices come down a wee bit (tight budget..and I am a Yorshireman) and also because LED technology is developing all the time, or so it seems.

You are more than welcome to a trip out on the Dehler. Not quite in the 235 class, but a good sail.

We have the aquasignal combined tricolour and all round white at the mast head of our 25 ft boat with only a 85 ah battery charged by wind or solar. The all round white is an led and the tricolour a normal bulb. The combination allows us a night sail on a fully charged battery with the tricolour, or if extended range is required judicous use of the allround white instead. Anchoring is a led lamp on a halyard, if we are not drying out which is often the case when I dont bother. PS have you thought of the Hunter delta as replacement, might be a bit heavy for you trialer sailing.
