We are coming down to Portsmouth tomorrow to help a friend bring his newly purchased Fairline 40 back to Burnham on Crouch. She's moored at Southsea Marina and we're planning to do a first hop to Ramsgate on Saturday morning, and then Ramsgate to Burnham on Sunday.

Cos we're East Coasters, we're not overly familiar with the South Coast. Any tips on things to avoid when we come out of Southsea? It's going to be hard enough getting familiar with a completely different boat, without worrying about hazards in the water. This is the first cruiser our friends have owned, and they haven't had any tuition (of any description) yet, so it will all be down to us.

We haven't got the very latest charts for that area, so anything anyone wants to contribute will be much appreciated.

Ta very much.

Re: weather ?

Not this weekend!!? Head east, towards the sitting room, and consider a berth in one of the chairs. Seriously haver a look at the synoptic chart for Friday (on this site, click on the weather and tides. The tightly packed isobars means windy, hence all leaves on ground and weather warning on the telly. I can get more info for the wekend, but seems bad idea.

Re: weather ?

Thanks Matt - if you can get any more info, I'd appreciate it. I've been watching the advance forecast on onlineweather.com and they've forecase a 2-4 South West for Saturday but then I heard gale warnings on the BBC news last night, so I did start to panic a bit. I can't make head nor tail of the weather on this site (sorry Kim!) but then weather forecasting is not my strong point.

Any idea if the following weekend is going to be any better?

Thanks

Re: weather!!

Can't see where it says 2-4. It says "24" as in 24knot/mph wind?

Saturday is SW 6 or 7 occasionaly 8. veering 5 or 6, 3-4 later in evening. Sea rough or very rough.

Sunday is SW 3-4 , then East 4 or 5.

Monday, gales.

Dunno bout next weekend.

When entering Ramsgate Harbour (having obtained radio permission from harbour control) ensure the Green bouy is left well to starboard. Proceed towards the inner entrance (where the small lighthouse is) and enter the inner harbour staying as close as you can (within reason) to that wall.
If you want to be closer to the town take the pontoons ahead of you to starboard, the portside pontoons are new and great but just that little bit further to walk to town. The fuelling berth is to starboard after you have entered the inner harbour.

Re: weather!!

ah but it's changed today - honest guv!

Yesterday it said 2-4 for Saturday and 5ish for Sunday I think, something like that. Anyway, it looked okayish for the journey. Now it's looking horrid but HWMBO still wants to go for it. This could be my last ever posting.........

Anyone want two tickets for the bash at Wig n Pen if I don't come back?

Re: weather!!

Why not wait a little longer, like a day and see what developes, have alook at the weather sight, www.wetterzentrale.de then topkarten then keine frames then ukmo it gives you forecasts up to 5 days ahead the USAF are very good and simple. sounds long winded, but the site is in german, so you need to do it as described.

Thanks Byron. We had a stopover in Ramsgate last year so we're familiar with getting in there. We were contemplating staying in the outer harbour as it's only for one night, but I want to go to the casino so I think we'd be better off inside )

Well, after a journey like this, I think the least a girl can expect is a few chips in the casino!

By the way, anyone know how a Fairline 40 behaves in rough seas? It's got Volvo 235 hps. We know our Princess would handle it okay, but it's a bit nerve racking when it's a totally unknown boat - and it belongs to someone else!

Thanks again for everyone's help.

In a totally unknown boat with unknown capabilities unknown engines and a squirrely forecast, can you hear yourselves! I think I might think again and do it with a better forecast.

HW around 1000 and is a near spring. Current thro' Langstone can be ferocious - have seen the mooring buoys swept under - but is otherwise safe passage 168 True to the Langstone Fairway beacon. Southsea has a cill which is open +/-3 hrs HW. West going ebb starts -1hr HW. West going ebb and SSW wind won't be pleasant. This site might make your mind up for you. It's raw data from Sandettie which isn't too far from where you're going. Latest forecast has wind F3-4 friday morning, increasing later. Not nice, but good luck.

Rethinking

We are rethinking as I type. I'm getting v nervous now that all you v experienced boaty types are saying we must be nuts! I agree there are too many unknowns and nasty looking forecasts. HWMBO is on to the Met office now, but I'm trying to persuade him that just because the A Team plans always came together, doesn't mean ours will!

Re: Rethinking

If you do make a run for it and have to abort to Eastbourne don't moor up on the visitors pier near the fuel pumps. I think no-ones told the Seaguls that their marsh has gone. The pontoons and the boats were covered in nasty sh***y stuff - an amazing amounts.

There\'s no hurry in life!

Dont think anyone actually said "you must be nuts" - although some would be forgiven for thinking it.

Suggest you have a spin in the Solent this weekend to get to know the boat and go another weekend on a fair forecast.

Oops!

Sorry, 2nd brat/offspring/layabout says should have wrote "imho" abt G Meueller.

They are good tho'. You can read geostrophic wind scale quite accurately (measure distance between isobars and read off from lat 50 scale in top left hand corner) and Bracknell forecasts are good imho (+/-5kn) and, imho, you can compare Greenwich data with forecast to demonstrate that, imho. (bolx! matey, why aren't you working?)
