I have been asked to look at a 38 foot Nauticat is there anything I should look out for. I know very little about them so any help is gratefully received.

Re: naughtycat

Checkto make sure it does'nt piss in the toaster cos if it does then it'll probably flood the kitchen. Also check the cat flap is big enough

Thats cheating - makes a nonsense of my reference to a Naughtycat ... /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Well for one thing it has lots of flappy bits and sticks, not really your bag. How old is it? The old ones had problems with the deckhouse and the chain plates pulling through the deck, thats about all I know about them, although they have a huge following of fans. Hoo was thinking of one, bigger admitted.

Check out the width of the deck alongside the pilothouse !!!

Much to narrow in my opinion, have to shuffle along sideways. Not good for such an expensive vessel /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Look also at the deck stowage for fenders/anchors etc.

Apart from that there is an amazing amount of space below.

Build quality is great !

Is it an old one with wooden cabin tops, if so what condition the roof beams. I think the MK 1s might have this if like the 33

Are there one or two doors to the pilot house? If one door beware it can be difficult to get on deck if healed to Starboard. Some were built this way to make them better for live abourd...

Lovely boats lots of varnished woodwork!

Not true ! A bit of axle grease and a tap with a mallet and she went in forwards! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I don't know what you're asking when you say 'what to look for' - i have one but it's quite new (built 2001). A lot has changed with the models over the years, particularly with the hulls.

As you know with boats it's all so subjective depending on what you're looking for.

I was determined to get a nearly new Island Packet from the states but the right boat didn't come on the market...my N38 ticked all my boxes, but it wouldn't if it hadn't been a 'liveaboard layout'.

What specifically are you being asked about them?

True - and the older ones more than the newer. Again, it's all 'what you want', but all worth taking into account. The maintenance that is.

We took the opportunity with an unexpected extra few weeks in a friendly boatyard in Rhode Island to re-varnish ours ourselves before we headed south. Hard work, enjoyable... at times... satisfying... when you forget how hard it was and see the results.

Here's a few before / during / after pics. The brown stuff on the chrome one the bowsprit is the previous owners 'paid for' job - they obviously could be bothered to take the wood off first. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif I cleaned all that off.

apologies for including a pic of my hull polishing job - my excuse being I have 'my pictures' and imageshack open in seperate windows /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Anyway, long and short of all this is, you can enjoy being on a boat even if a boat isn't in the water...... if you like that sorta thing

Lucky you !!!

I wish that a 331 would comeon the market at a price I could afford /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

You handy work looks good, but why did you go away from natural teak finish, something thats needs constant up-keep ??

Mark - We're going back on the 25th, flying to Miami and driving up to Savannah. Don't know what then, got to renew the insurance and it's still hurricane season and all that. What's it like your way then?

Moonshine - the previous owner had all the teak varnished, wasn't a bad job but not good and there were some patches needing repair. It started off as a small job on the swim platform and bowsprit, but we caught the scraping / sanding bug and couldn't stop. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
