I'm looking around at travel (medical really) insurance for when we are on the boat in Europe. Like many others we spend our whole holiday on the boat & have no other property abroad.

My cover via. an RBS credit card changed the rules earlier this year with wording that completely excludes cover if the holiday is only for the purpose of being on the boat. If it was a few weeks in the middle of a normal holiday it would appear to be ok, even offshore! I raised a complaint as the terms were worse but they didn't uphold it & showed no interest in the fact they have wrecked the cover for boat owners.

I thought I would check the NatWest Select current account policies & after a conversation with their insurance advisers it's exactly the same. They were very clear there would be no cover if the sole purpose of the travel was to be on the boat & cruising even if it is just inshore waters.

So I thought it important to flag up that if you rely on a NatWest Select Current account insurance to cover you on your own boat for the whole holiday, forget it, you are NOT covered.

I will go with Bishop Skinner who at least understand boating.

That is quite normal for travel insurance - particularly when it is "free" with other financial products. They are usually the most restrictive policies around - hardly surprising as they are not tailored to individual needs but just cover the basics of a typical two weeks in the sun on the beach type holidays.

There are many Travel Insurance Packages that you buy that exclude insurance unless:

You travel by a public carrier ie airline or ferry co

You stay in paying accommodation

Most people on boats are unaware of this.

I have Mariners annual travel insurance by Towergate which covers me for lots of boating outside of Guernsey, skiing, high risk sports ( not that I do any except Skiing) long Holidays ( not that I take them etc).

Towergate take your premiums, do they actually pay out.
see recent insurance posts

I should have posted on the recent link, what a load of tosh that was.

Towergate are a serious player in marine insurance both commercial and retail.

I have my personal boat with them (ie retail), holiday insurance( ie retail) and commercial cover as well. They have proved to provide good cover when the need arises in all cases. In each case and very different circumstances they have supported the insured.

I have no hesitation in using or recommending them.

Just go past the froth of I deal with x,y and z on this forum and therefore they are wonderful.

Bandit, it's your opinion that the negative comments re Towergate were a load of tosh. Unfortunately there are people who were insured with them who would beg to disagree.

But it's a free world, you pays yer money etc etc.
