While sailing today and last day, I have noticed that the log of the above keeps alternating between the word out and the actual depth. Can anyone explain why?
Also the log unit has suddenly stopped showing any speed except 00.0 kts, even though the paddle wheel was cleaned and refitted a few weeks ago. Can anyone also explain this one too?
Thanks, C_W.

If my log stops reading I normally give a short run astern, if that fails I loosen the ring on the paddle wheel and turn the paddle through 180 degrees and if that fails I take it out and clean it. While it is out give it a few flicks or blow on it and check that the instrument shows a speed.

Out means out of range. Flicking between "out" and actual depth could be a bad connection or lack of oil or heavy weed on the hull (if oil bath type) or if external transducer, fouling on the transducer or worst case, a duff transducer or head

Log not working - bad connection, jammed impellor, paddle wheel unit fitted 90° or 270° out of line, magnet missing from paddle wheel or worst case a duff paddlewheel unit or head.

Unfortunately the Instruction Manual is as much use as an ashtray on a motorbike when it comes to fault finding but there again what does one expect from something "Designed and Manufactured in England" /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hello C_W
I have the same set up and experience similar problems. The paddle wheel always has something jamming it if speed reads zero. I have had this problem within minutes of cleaning! It pickup something! Motoring astern can something free the wheel?
The OUT on the depth I have found is usually a result of turbulent water assuming that the low range is set up correctly. The effect is shown when using a lock or crossing the wake of the large power boat. If is not due to external turbulence then it most probably will be hull itself, the only advise I can offer is to try and locate the sensor on an area of the hull where the water flow is as laminar as possible perhaps forward of the keel.
All the best

Thanks guys for the advice.
I hadent thought of rotating the paddle unit to clear a blackage, will try it.
My depth transd is in oil bath, used Sunflour cooking oil, not sure if it is covered though, will check that too.
Thanks.

My duet sometimes shows OUT, but have been told that if a shoal of fish is swimming under it at the time it will affect it.... or when in really shallow water.

The paddlewheel on my log also doesn't show the speed.... the unit is <2 yrs old, and I know that crap does grow on it and requires cleaning, but even when working I don't think it is going round properly as that speed is miles away from the GPS, which is making sense.

Hopefully you'll crack it /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Of course the log doesn't represent speed over ground, unlike the GPS. If you've got a 3kn tide against you, the log could be reading 5kn and the gps 2kn. My log is still crap though!

Oh well I'll just keep estimating until I can get a new one. Whats better than the clipper duet

I know that!

I also know what the tide is like in the Helford River and at the state of tide to know what tidal advantage/disadvantage I am likely to have.... YET, it still doesn't come anywhere near!

I don't know if the others are physically any different to the duet, and therefore still going to have the fouling problems.

It will work... however, regular cleaning is required. If you can, remove the log when leaving the boat over the week - should prevent any crap building up (obviously subject to location/boat - I cannot really remove mine as the amount of water that will enter the bilges in the process is far too great for such a little 'un). As for the echo sounder, shouldn't cause issues so long as installed correctly.
