I have a Nasa Target Sounder fitted to my boat which up until recently worked fine, then suddenly the display started saying 'out'. Everything appears to be OK, all cables & I can hear the clicking of the instrument transmitting, very faintly but I got bigs ears which helps. the transducer is not fouled. Any ideas?

Out means it is too deep, or at least the instrument thinks so.

This would make me think, since you can hear it clicking away, that it is not receiving anything back. You will get the word out if you transmit into thin air. From your statement about fouling I am guessing you have the transducer through hull?

If not, try hanging it over the side and see if you get a reading, it maybe that it has somehow moved and requires relocation, just thoughts.

If this does not work and you say you have inspected the cables etc. (Did you clean the plug and socket behind the instrument, isoprop and a small stiff paint brush should do*)

If out of warranty, you could take a guess at the txducer, I know allgadgets sell new transducers for not too many pennies. If you are more practical, it may be worth breaking into the cable and doing some con checks.

Is there anything you have done recently that might affect it, new item on helm, new power supplies, had helm apart sort of thing?

*small stiff paintbrush, any soft art brush, cut with snips half way down the bristles, most electronics geeks will have variants of these.
