NASA speed/log impellor

I have purchased a new impellor and pivot pin for my log as the old one keeps on sticking.

Am I right to say that the old pin will drive out with a centrepoint and hammer, after withdrawing from the tube, without damaging the rest of the fitting.

I don't want to try to do this afloat and will be beaching on legs for a tide for a routine insurance survey in a couple of weeks so will put it off 'til then.

Any suggestions from forumites gratefully received.

Suggest you use a pin punch (ie a parallel sided punch) rather than a centre punch, remember to support the plastic moulding whilst tapping the pin out. Its not difficult and you obviously have the right approach.

my nasa log jammed due to the metal pin on one of the fins going rusty, then expanding, then sticking out the side, a file sorted than one.

Be sure to support as much of the lower "bearing" as possible when punching the pin out. The plastic is very delicate so the more supposrt you can get round the area through which the pin passes the better.

My log wheel sticks because of organic growth. I clean it regularly and spray with WD40 that does appear to help. The pin is a running fit and does not require any force to remove it. If it is difficult it is most probably corrosion. Again WD40 and a file should solve that.

Thanks to all for the tips. I hope it just pushes gently out.

Happynelly is right. Dont use force more than a sharpe pointed tool used by hand to push the pin out. No need for puches and hammers.

Regards.

Peter.

I dunno. After a while, mine sticks to the housing (very loose on the paddle wheel) but the housing boss is so thin round the pin that by pushing it I think you may be in with a better chance of bending it until it breaks. I'd still prefer to tap it out -ensuring that the lower boss is as well supposrted as possible. Obviously I agree we don't need to be using a 5lb lump hammer here but I think a series of gentle shocks to break the general "crustiness" holding the pin could be better than a single force application.
