I have fitted the Silicone Marine exhaust temperature monitor. With this one a small hole is drilled into the exhaust hose just after the injection bend into which the temperature probe is inserted, which is held in position by a large modified jubilee clip. The sensor has an o ring seal and this seems to be very effective.

I guess the NASA cable ties could be replaced by metal cable ties if you are worried... (of the sort we need to use if cable tying a network cable to metal cable trays above a doorway).

I however went with the Vetus sender (and now you've got me worried about the nut dropping off in the exhaust hose!) and just wired it parallel with the original existing engine over temp sensor. Now if either coolant or exhaust (>71 degrees) overheats, the original alarm beeper will sound. No additional displays needed.

I would suggest that the OP sticks with the idea of a through hose sensor though, because over temp alert is very quick then.

I used a simple bi metal metal temperature switch clamped to the metal exhaust elbow so no need to put a hole in any exhaust piping and risk leakage

My experience is that the NASA exhaust temperature monitor works well. The probe fits very snugly in the hole that is drilled in the exhaust and there is very little chance of noticeable escape. Fitted to many boats with good results.

Is there a chance that this could malfunction and cause fumes to enter into the boat. Has that ever been known to happen?
What are the chances of a company like NASA selling something where that is likely to happen, how many units have they sold and how many have leaked?
How it is fitted by the installer maybe more to the point.
