The NASA depth sounderon my Kingfisher 20 does not appear to be working properly. It came with the boat and is obviously an early old ,through hull one.The boat is out of the water and although the electrical supply is sound the NASA screen shows - - - - when it is switched on . Could it be because the boat is out of the water it is not working. I have not inhereted a manuel for it and I dont know what model it is. Does any one have any ideas ? The transducer face was covered with antifouling but I have removed it and it still does'nt show any measurement only ----- again.

May be because its out of the water Some will give a reflection off the ground through the air but I don't think my old Seafarer one will. But that may be because its firing through the grp and many layers of antifouling

Big difference in the speed of sound through air compared with water of course but you can look that up as easily as I can.

You may find a manual on Nasa's website.

Check connections.

Its usually Ok to apply a thin film of antifouling

From memory, a row of dashes means that the unit isn't picking up a signal, which it won't on the hard. Any degree of panic is premature until you're back afloat, at which point it probably means that the transponder unit has given up the ghost, though it's certainly worth checking the lead for physical damage before shelling out for a new one.

The old version should display an E plus the depth when it's behaving.

The only manual on Nasa's website is for a current model.

Glad you asked this question as I am about to test my NASA Depth Sounder on my newly rewired boat which I haven't had on the water yet.

Mine comes up with 4 horizontal dashes when boat is out of the water, but works fine when in the water. My unit is at least 20 years old I reckon.
