I have an old Nasa Marine Stingray depth sounder on my boat and it is not working. I wonder if anybody can tell me if the transducer would work with other types of depth sounder. I have been told that it is more likeley the unit is defunct rather than the transducer, hence my question. has anybody ever sucessfully swapped their Stingray unit with another using the original transducer?

I think the transducer for the Stingray is the same as the one for the NASA "Target" and "Clipper" but you'd best check with NASA. I don't have the technical helpline phone number / website number to hand but they're very helpful.

You can still buy these. I am looking at one in a catelouge by Compass for £79- I need one as well as my yacht previously had a Seafarer sounder but the unit is gone. Acording to the blurb the stingray will use the same transducer. To quote:-

"You can use any 150 Khz transducer (such as the old Seafarer) with this intstrument so it is an ideal replacement for any old 'whirly gig' depth sounder."

Not sure what a whirly gig is but the inference is that older transducers wont work with more modern sounders. Anyway the website is www.compass24.com if you are interested.

The nasa stingray transducer will work with all nasa sounders, clipper cruiser and target. They will also work with seafarer, space age and many others. If your stingray doesn't work then contact nasa. They repair at very reasonable cost.
You can get them on 01438 354033.
