I post this to help anyone with a similar problem in future. When I first had the problem I found plenty of posts describing the problem, but few showing how it was finally solved. This was my experience:

Symptoms: NASA Clipper Duet displays 'out' for depth.

This indicates no return echo being received.

Troubleshooting:

1: obvious damage to cable? A functioning transducer usually makes clicking noises.
2: hard reset (this deletes all trip records and resets the unit to factory settings)
3: substitute another transducer (these cost about £32!) and I now have a spare for sale.
4: send to NASA. In my case repair and postage cost £31.86.

The actual fault in my case was a failed receiver coil and a choke in the alarm circuit, both diagnosed and replaced by NASA as part of the repair.

With hindsight it would have been more cost effective to bypass Step 3 unless you have easy access to a spare transducer.

How to do a hard reset:

With power off, hold down and press the TOTAL key and the ILLUM key simultaneously. Turn the power on. Continue to hold about 4 seconds, then release both buttons simultaneously. The display should read ALL SET, then LOA. It has now been reinitialized. All trip totals will be zero.

When I finally sent it to NASA it was returned repaired in a week.
