I am fitting a NASA BM1 battery monitor to the boat and intend to keep the house battery available for emergency engine starting, which will require the 100A monitor shunt to carry starter current. I have spoken to tech support at NASA and they reckon "it should be ok for short bursts of starter current". In my case only a 14hp Beta engine so not too heavy on starter current. Can anyone confirm that the shunt copes ok in practice? Appropriate size cables for the current fitted and shunt mounted in clear area in event of getting over warm. Not too concerned that erroneus battery capacity indication will occur if the house bank is used for emergency starting.

Edit: found the starter motor spec. power is 0.8Kw so shunt should be ok but would welcome confirmation from any using the configuration.

I had the very same concern when I fitted my BM1 earlier this year, I too contacted NASA by email and their response "It [black cable] and the shunt will withstand much higher loads for short duration so if engine fires quickly we cannot see it being a problem".
