As pvb.
I think NASA are missing a trick here. It would be a more useful product with an output and it might well stimulate a lot of extra sales, even at this stage of it's product life.

Was just thinking the same thing yesterday.
Do any of the other stand-alone units have an NMEA o/p

Thanks for all the replies. Just as I thought.

The owner from Fareham is going to find out what chart-plotter he has to find out what type of NMEA input is available.

I will try and discover whether it is possible to get a '183' output from the NASA unit even if it means no display of the 'little sperms' on the original NASA AIS unit. :D

Thanks again.;)

I seem to remember the Shipplotter yahoo group had some information on it. I dropped off the group because it was too technical for my level of interest.

One thread implied
  • There was no NEMA output because the PIC being used didn't have enough space to add the code.
  • There is apparently a jack socket inside used for testing where the RF audio is available. There are computer programs that can convert this to NMEA.

Back in February 2008 I asked NASA this

I said:

I understand that your AIS Radar Receiver does not presently output
NMEA data. Is this correct ? Do you have any plans to add this
feature ?

I would buy one if it did as that would give me the best of both
worlds; low power consumption without a plotter for when offshore and
a chart overlay for interpretation when inshore.

They replied promptly with this:

Dear Sir,

The AIS Radar does not output NMEA data, we ahve the AIS Engine for this function. There are no plans to include it on the product. Understand your reasoning though.

Regards,.
