can the NASA set be made to display a heads up view. It would be much more intuitive than the north up dip;ay that I have currently. Can find no metion in the instruction so I suspect not but if anyone knows better I'd be grateful. J

Agree with others that N up is only option with NASA unit.

Whether or not N up is intuitive is a more interesting question. If you have a plotter, and normally use it in N up mode, then there's a certain logic in having the AIS plot aligned with that. Similarly, if you use paper charts and no plotter, then having the AIS plot aligned with the chart makes sense. If you use a plotter with course or heading up, then switching between that and a N up display is obviously going to add difficulties.

FWIW, with my previous plotter I used course up, with the current one I've used N up. I could live with either, but on balance prefer N up. It would be interesting to see others' views. Let's have a poll:

This was a question about the NASA AIS Display ... the all in one unit rather than the engine ...
I would've bought it, except that it doesn't have an NMEA out ...

I believe that the Nasa AIS "Radar" will display "Course up", as it gets the direction info from the GPS and not from a compass source.

I have my plotter on head up as well as the radar, far more intuitive really. If we see a target 10° port, that is where we need to look. If I need to plot it on a chart for example, I put the lollipop over the target and get a lat and long, or I can set the marpa off to track it for me.

I don't understand the snobbery of using north-up, it just adds a confusion to the helm. Yes I can plot on paper charts which I do on passage before the perfectionists jump in and lecture me on sea safety.

Nothing to do with snobbery - just what I'm used to. I don't swivel the chart round on the desk, so I don't do it with the CP .. I di try it and found it looked wierd...
But for a non-chart display - and certainly one that doesn't display your own heading then course up would be preferable.
