I recently picked one up cheap on ebay which may or may not be working.
Its a mark one without any indicator lights.
I have both seaclear and an ais monitor on the laptop and its wired up via a nine pin serial port.
But Im showing no nmea data output from the engine?
Baud rates are matched and its got an antenna fitted.
There is no Ais input into the engine as I am landlocked.
Does the engine send out a passive data string showing that its working without input from the antenna? Or
Does it need a signal input before it can generate a data output?

I have the version 2 with the light and if I disconnect the aerial I receive no data and the light does no blink so I would say that If no data is received no data will be sent on RS232 line.

(I've not got a MKI.. maybe it transmits 'something' on boot up .. maybe not.. )

I would not expect it to output any NMEA AIS sentences unless it hears an AIS transmission via the antenna.

Nasa confirm that the engine will only send out nmea data when it recieves a signal so unless Im down the south coast Im unlikely to know if its working!
