A friend of mine, that I met on a marina this summer, has this engine in a 2010 Merry Fisher 815, carbon copy of mine but a year newer, he has about 580 hours on the engine. Oil and filters changed every year. I was picking his brains about his modified trailer and he mentioned his turbo had blown just after his 4 hour trip back down the coast since we met. He got it rebuilt in the UK and fitted it last weekend but it is running as bad as ever. He now thinks the engine has blown and will have to come out of the boat........ oil is blowing into the turbo from a pipe coming from the rocker cover and is getting a lot of back pressure up from the dipstick pipe. Any ideas............. valves, rings? it looks like the old turbo was fine :censored::censored: he was pretty pi$$ed off so I did not ask too many questions yet. Any suggestions? Thanks

Google search suggest cracked head , or only head gasket into an oil passage . @ Around 500 + hrs
Mostly ( same Toyota block ) towing heavy loads in 4x4 s
Boats it will be possible fouled sterngear of hull = overloading .

A good rule of thumb for boat diesels is try to run under 80 % load .If you haven’t got load gauges fuel burn is another good way to calculate the load ,Don’t use rpm .
Your base motor is good , but in a boat overloading kills engines prematurely irrespective of the quality of the base or marque.

Thanks Portofino, how do load gauges work or what are they connected to to ascertain the ''load'' . To be fair to this chap he has had the boat for nearly six years now and keeps it immaculate, very little growth where he keeps it in Cork harbour.
