Nanni engines

I am buying an new engine for a long keel yacht. I am thinking of buying from Nanni since they have a good reputation.
The preferred engine size (82hp) is however turbo aspirated. I am more familiar with naturally aspirated engines. Is this way all engines are going and should I not be so concerned about this ?
 
I wouldn't be concerned. You get more power from a more compact unit.

Nearly all larger boat engines, and almost every diesel car you can buy now will be turbocharged. They are simply, reliable things. Good clean oil is all that is required for problem free use.
 
Volvo torbo engines used to have a bad name but then....volvo....
I have a smaller n/a Nanni which I've had no problems with. The important thing to remember (as alb40 said) is good clean oil and also to let the engine run for 15-20 secs on standby before shutting down to allow oil flow to cool the turbo bearings.
 
If you want to use it on a sailing yacht, it might not be the best thing to have. The way many engines are used on a sailing boat are already a challenge for a 'normal' diesel engine let alone a turbo version.
This relates mainly to the warm up of the engine of course. So I you are prepared to use your engine the way it is designed for (proper warm-up and no short bursts of full power when the engine is still cold), that you should be OK.
Mind you a turbo is an expensive piece of hardware and yet another thing that can fail. Not good on a sea-going vessel.

I really dont understand Arno's comments. A Marine diesel engine is usually running at constant speed, with a steady load, often for long periods at the same engine rpm. I think Nanni use Kubota engines which are fitted to items of plant equipment, which do similar. Having seem a small digger next door being used to build the foundations for a new house, the engine was constantly changing speed, and which would have put more wear and tear into the system than being run at a steady throttle setting
 
I will probably get shot down in flames over this, but, have a look at the naturally aspirated Ford 2.4 FSD as sorted and modified by Lancing Marine, comes at 85hp. Have personal knowledge of mine and I bought on the recc of my oppo who sails an 18t smack. Big advantage is you can get parts anywhere at non-boaty prices...and mechanically they are pretty dam reliable! No! Iam not a white van man!
