I've been wondering about boat names....

Is it really unlucky to change the name of your boat?

Is there any evidence that it will sink or catch fire if you dare to change it from a "hilarious" (eg Go With The Flow) water pun, to something more appropriate to the owner?

Thanks /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

We changed the name of our boat when we bought it and within one season it ended up on the rocks! Once repaired, the first thing we did was to attach a brass plack engraved with the previous name on a bulkhead - 5 years later and no further incidents!
Possibly a coincidence but we're not going to risk it by taking the plaque off!
This is a tradition/superstition I've seen on some older racing yachts where they've passed through a number of different owners and had subsequent name changes and down below there's a row of brass plaques listing the previous names.

Oh course it's safe. I have done it three times. If I do have a disaster I'll be looking for more tangible reasons that some agrieved sea god.

I was told some years ago that the 'bad luck' had its origins in the days of the old wooden sailing ships which had to have the name of the vessel burned or carved into the main cross-beam supporting the mast (the forerunner to the current Part 1 irremovable identity plaque). Every time the vessel changed hands and was renamed, the previous name had to be removed by planing, thus weakening the beam. Too much led to its collapse - which really was ununlucky!

Tee Too.

How do you approach the handling of chain-emails that arrive in your inbox?

I don't know if I could live with a water pun - I think I'd want a road based pun or an irrelevant statement.
