If you purchase a used boat which has a name, what if any, are the rules regarding changing the name?

you will need to registed it anyway in your chosen name if you register it at all
however - if Pt 1 registered you may consider transferring as is which can save some pennies I gather?
custom has it that it's bad luck to change the name; however, convieniently, it is suggested that you can get round this by leaving the original name onboard somewhere..........
then there's signwriting etc......... /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif........but if it's vinyl based a hot air gun removes the old stuff easily.

It is considered to be unlucky to change the name. Some people on here know the procedure for name changing ceremony though.

dont know where I have this from but I was under the impression that the bad luck only clocked in if you name change whilst in the water ?!

This is the only renaming ceremony in existence and known to man well one particular man acshully, until now never even written down. It has been told to me by the very salty old sea dog himself who is all knowing about these sort of things and has to be done in his presence as to guarantee it is done correctly coz he is in league with more tranquil spirits see and he is the master of ceremonies who must be called up on this forum with the time and place where this ceremony is to take place.
It needs to be done at midnight and at anchor and under a full moon.
The vessel to be renamed should be securely anchored up, seemingly only seconds before the ceremony is to take place you will think he is not going to arrive then silently the silhouetted Squadron 56 will appear and drop his anchor complete with eerie mist fog bellowing from his mist fog maker exhaust pipes some people think that this is where he over does the theatrical bit and everyone ends up coughing diesel smoke. With the black canvas side curtains of his squadron and the most ghostly appearance of DJE Fabs standing on the fly bridge dressed in his fairline jacket his appearance resembles Capt'n Bilbosa and the Black Pearl.
The Squadron will lower the long boats or tender and will come alongside the vessel to be renamed. Safely piped aboard he will need copious amounts of Sloe Gin.
After a short while the lady of the ship this next bit must be done by a female, owner or owners wife, owners girlfriend, owners girlfriends mate or neighbour female ok... must appear naked holding only a carved old bit of wood with the old name engraved or burnt into it or biro'ed oneside and the new name the otherside and a lighted candle in the other (it is good to have pre-made this). I am not permitted to reveal anymore of this but Old DJE Fabs will get on with the proceedings that can not be revealed, you may one day need this service, but basically female walks round the boat three times and chucks the bit of wood with both names on in the bilge where it stays for eternity.

Blooming heck!!!! I was just about to buy my first wee boat and call it "CraigDiver", but i'm s#!tting myself now to change it's name!!!

A lot of details of the ceremony I have omitted eg invoking the name of the ruler, renaming and calling poseidon. Only DJE Fabs knows this which is why he must do it. A new line for you praps then DJE?
