Do musto manufacture in China?
What do they do in Basildon, Essex, UK?
Is that simply there HQ?
Do you know where they do their Research and Development?
Yes, Musto and Hyde most certainly manufacture in China; go into any chandlers and check the labels carefully, although, so far as I know, they do not produce their very top line breathables there.
No manufacturer with any sort of a brain does their R&D in China; the laws on protection of intellectual property there are not up to the job and enforcemment is irregular. It would be too much of a risk.
I was under the impression that the only R&D done these days was by the customer. If it works fine, if not try another sir! Its made in china and is so cheap to make we dont care.
Interesting comment. I have a riding jacket bought some years ago from Musto. Meant to be waterproof, but never was. Sent back and changed(without argument) originally as leaked, but replacement STILL leaked! All marketing and no substance is my humble conclusion on Musto!
exactly, everyone laughed at the platform abandonment suits i got off an oil rig in the north sea but after one hour of heavy weather they were all soaked and freezing the auto pilot failed and we had to helm for 2_3 days the suits i had woked perfectly with only a pair of underpants on under it,luckily i had a few spare and the mustos went in the bin.. untill some posing was needed on the pontoon that is
I have the "brand name" gear but to be quite honest I aquired /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif 4 sets of flourescent yellow jackets and trousers as sold by industrial clothing suppliers and they are far superior to any of the "brand name" suits I have used in the past. Truely water proof, breathable, quilted lining with heavier detachable quilted lining for the really cold days and a detachable hood that does not let water through the zip and down one's neck.
Might not go down too well at Cowes or on the Hamble - I mean they are not exactly Musto or Lloyd or whatever but who cares I like to be warm and dry and comfortable.
I must admit though, we do sort of stand out leaving the marina with everyone on deck /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Dame Ellen and all the other round-the-world racing types all advertise Musto, H-L, etc etc. Presume their stuff works OK or are they all wearing black bin liners underneath? They all obviously have the manufacturers' top-of-range gear like HPX which we can have too - so how come we have so many problems? Most of us aren't exactly going out in Southern Ocean conditions.
How well does the type of gear you get for hill walking hold up in the marine environment.,.
I have some Lowe Alpine gear, its windproof breathable all that mularky..
It holds off the rain well.. not sure how good it would be at sea though? Probably no good for crossing biscay in january but maybe just the ticket for pottering about in the solent or the clyde..?
Just wondered if this was another area where the "marine" tag bumped the price up a shade..
Hill walking gear works fine, been using mine for years, and it has the advantage of being much lighter and packing away smaller. If I go sailing though, I take my proper marine branded versions, as people are convinced you are going to get wet and cold in the hill walking gear! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
I know that the professional seafarers (Merchant Navy, Fishermen etc. ) all use proper oil skins. Usually Helly Hanson or 66deg North (Icelandic) are great too. You may look like a walking tango man but you'll have the last laugh. Also, just wear a baseball cap under the hood, then when you turn your head, the hood will move back to reveal that 100,000 ton tanker following you! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
