In India looking out of our hotel bedroom window we spotted this moored up in the shipyard. Any ideas who she is?

Yep they can afford to build & crew there new carriers whilst we give them millions in foreign aid. Uk must be full of gullible suckers.

No but a good call! We saw that a few days ago in Kochi. We are further north now and this vessel is a bit older.

SammyB, it looks like INS Viraat (think spelling is correct). It used to be HMS HERMES, flagship of the Royal Navy for many years. She has just been decommissioned by the Indian Navy and up to her decommissioning she was the worlds longest serving aircraft carrier. I served on her in the early 80's and she was affectionate known as 'The Happy H'. She was built as conventional fixed wing aircraft carrier and then became a Commando Carrier before becoming a fixed wing carrier again when she had the Ski Jump fitted in 1980/81 and operated the venerable Sea Harrier. She was sold to India sometime in the 80's and continued to operate Harriers as well as some rotary winged aircraft. Her Pennant number was R12. Hope that helps
