Not boaty. Can anyone name this lug, please?
It’s about 18mm od with hole for a 6mm bolt as earth strap. It has 6 pattern star.
The wire dia, including insulation is 4.5mm, can anyone estimate the wire area (size)?

Many thanks.

It's basically a posh version of these

iu

Crimp eye terminals, available in all sizes up to 50 sq mm cable diameter. The teeth are to help keep it from shaking loose.

Back to the job in hand. That looks like an earthing strap from an old 60/70s car although the ones on offer now from vintage specialists seem to have just plain lugs.

That’s exactly what it is. Specifically, the picture shows the smaller earth lead to the inner wing. The main lead goes to gearbox, near to the starter motor and has chafed so I need to make a replacement as they are NLA. The battery post connection, not shown, has both 16 and 6 mm2 cables connected together. Each of the 3 lugs has a different wire size, shape and bolting hole.

The forum is an amazing resource and has a wealth of knowledge and experience. It’s always humbling that professionals are willing to offer information freely and willingly, without reward.

Most of us don’t know everything about everything, only a few command that status (and they usually back themselves into a retractable corner, driven by their lack of knowledge, immaturity and over inflated egos).

Every day is a school day for me.

Thanks to all.

If you have no other need for a hydraulic crimper and don't really want to buy one, you could:

a) Post the cables to me and i'll crimp the terminal on, for the cost of the terminal and return post.

b) Let me have the relevant measurements and i'll make the cable up for the cost of materials and return post.

That’s an incredibly warm gesture, Paul, thank you. However, everything is now on order and I’m quite looking forward to making it. It’s disappointing that it will not be “original” so the next best option is that I’ll have made it. Originality is both intrinsic and fiscal value of the car.

Finding the chafe couldn’t have come at a worse time. It’s the biggest, relevant car event of the season this coming weekend and my black car is now off the road. Fortunately, I have a grey one, too, so not a complete loss.

Thanks for taking the time to search, much appreciated.

That shows wire size of 1.5mm2, I’m looking for a larger one, suitable for 6mm2 wire.
Sure, but if you google "toothed ring tongue terminal" there will be hits to inspire for further seaches, like
As mentioned standard ring terminals (plain hole as opposed to toothed) for press fit or solderinig are plenty availabe in all sorts of sizes

Thanks again, @ChromeDome I've set a search criteria within the Farnell website for 6mm2 wire and M6 bolt hole, ring terminal and it shows 112 matches but not one of them a star/.toothed ring, unfortunately. I ordered all of the parts required to make this earth lead yesterday, including a plain ring for this one, but I'd be happy to continue the search for a like-for-like replacement.
