If you can't tie knots, tie lots.

Milady doesn't do knots, so my fenders are numbers and tied off to the right length for each position, with a snap shackle to attach them. They're also big enough to cover most possible situations. It makes life so much easier and cheaper than finding one's gone AWOL in the night, not to mention the improvement in marital harmony...

Very much this. My son is 5 now but when he was younger I wanted him to have the responsibility of being involved. The knots he'd tie looked exactly like the one in in the photo and I never changed them. If the boat was still there when we got back that was 100% due to his judgement and ingenuity. To some limited degree he understood that I hope it built a little bit of character into him. Piles of rope, always took ages to untangle. (His skills didn't go as far as untying.) Never had one come undone.

I'm all in favour. My lad picked it up in time as I'm sure that whoever tied the knot above will. And if for whatever reason they never can (we don't know their story) that's fine, the important thing is they're on a boat having fun.

She must have missed out on all that craft stuff, knitting, crochet, embroidery etc, that I thought girls used to do at school!

Obviously I've reported this post for being sexist and I fully anticipate a long period in the Gulab for your corrective education BUT now you mention it, my wife and daughter love tying knots and take pride in it. It is a fine motor control thing that typically women enjoy. Radio is deffo a pink job on our boat and I think knots are as well. I'd never thought about it before, so thanks for the insight.
