Chile

Neat little story to descibe it:
white five-pointed star in the center represents a guide to progress and honour; blue symbolizes the sky, white is for the snow-covered Andes, and red represents the blood spilled to achieve independence.

Supplementary question.

I saw a boat today in the UK flying the Flag of Chile from the Port Spreader and what looks to me like the CA defaced blue.

So is there any way that the flag of Chile could be used to justify a defaced blue of any kind. For instance is there an ex Pat Chile yacht club with the flag of Chile as it's burgee that is allowed to flat a defaced blue that looks a bit like that one. That kind of thing.

It's possible the bloke just put the flags up because he likes them, and they have no meaning to him which is is fair enough AFAIC.

as a courtesy flag ? Usually at the starboard yardarm or crosstree of the mast of single-masted boat, and from the jackstaff of a boat which has no mast.

Sorry, I didn't ask the question I meant to ask. Have rewritten it!

I would assume the boat has a Chilean on board. Owners wife or friends maybe.

My guess was also that the boat had Chileans on board. Perhaps it was a charter yacht, it is common to see a boat abroad with a flag at port cross-tree indicating crew nationality.

The most confusing we had was a French registered Belgian boat crewed by a Swiss captain & Dutch crew. At least I think that's what it was as it was an alcoholic evening and I remember that we were only invited because our group was Scottish and English. They joked about a rule of no more than one person from a country on board at one time. It was an enterntaining night though and I remember speaking to a Spaniard as well. It's useful (but embarrassing) when everyone automatically uses English as the lingua franca in these groups.

Maybe they flew it because it's a bit Chile - it is February, after all :p

It's not uncommon to fly on the port spreader (some Brit charterers even use the starboard) the national flag of the crew (frequently only one crew member).

Thanks all.

Looks like nobody can think of any reason the Chile flag would be flown in conjunction with a defaced blue.

I guess it was a CA defaced blue and he just happened to forget to put his CA burgee up. Or maybe he just didn't want to for some reason.

Thanks again.
